I'm leaving the country and wondered if my Motorola Droid Max can use the GSM network and whether it is or can be unlocked?

It is sold unlocked and has the ability to use foreign GSM. You would not want to use it if you are moving permanently, but for travel it is fine.

That's good news. Will it accept the simm card of the foreign GSM network provider and become as a local phone for our 2 month visit?

Yes. You'll just have to use the foreign SIM for service for 2 months. Then come home and put in the Verizon SIM.
