Do I need back up assistant in order to back up phone and change devices?

just upgraded to a iPhone 7  i currently have a 6  how do i back up my phone.  i just download backup assistant on my phone is this all I need and will all photos be backed up

For iPhones, back up to iCloud or to iTunes on a computer for best results.  Restore this back up to the new phone.
