How do I activate my device with my current phone number?

my daughter in law just upgraded to an IPhone 7 plus and she gave me her iPhone 6.  How do I go about registered this phone with my phone number?  I currently have an iPhone 4.  Thanks!

TAMBRA99, you can go about changing your device by getting a new SIM Card from your local direct Verizon store and the store representative will assist with activating the phone to your line.

This does not tell me how to do this on  my own and I will reuse my Sim card.
