First, is it really necessary to install iTunes on my computer and is it also necessary to set up an Apple account ? Also, do they ask for credit card information when setting up an account ?

Considering the only way to activate the iPhone is through iTunes, I'd say yeah, you'll have to download it to atleast one computer. And if I remember correctly you need to enter a credit card when you sign up for an account. If you're worried about giving your credit card information, I wouldn't. I've never had or ever heard of Apple charging more than what someone purchases, or giving any information out. They're way too big of a company to risk that. I don't know about having to make an Apple account, I used my old AOL email to sign up for iTunes, and I still use that to log on.

In the bad old days with AT&T, I bought and set up 3 iPhones, and when I set up iTunes accounts for the phones, a credit card wasn't required to just set up and activate the phone. I DID have to set up a card when I opened an account with the Apple store.
Has this practice changed?

Yes gerio, it has changed.... When I bought ipod touch in 2008, I created an account without credit card info. When I bought my wife an iPhone last month, I made an account for her and the credit card was required to open an account.
