Done with dumb phones, need a smart phone

I honestly think that monkeys are designing the feature phones anymore.  Horrible ergonomics and usability.  Haven't found one I like in years.  So I am thinking of moving to an iPhone.  (had an iPod touch forever and love the simplicity of execution and design ; it just works) Can I get a minimal data plan, and then set up my phone so that it doesn't really use any data?  I am around wifi probably 95% of my waking moments and thus would want to use that when available.

Is that possible?  Is that possible in the android world as well?

Well the minimum data plan is 2 GB and that's $30 a month. If you use mostly wi-fi you shouldn't have to worry about shutting off the mobile data as 2 GB is plenty in that case. But if you insist yes you can shut off the mobile data in Android phones.

Depending on your plan you also have the ability to move to share everything and can go to as little as 1gb (or 300mb if there is only one smartphone on the plan) - but it may not be cost effective with only one device on the account.

It's a family share plan with 4 lines.  3 out of 4 of us would move to smart phones, my wife just doesn't care and would happily use her env2 for the rest of time.  I saw the shared data plan of 300MB, which is why I would want data turned off on them, as any 1 of us could blow through 300MB in an instant if we weren't careful.

You can turn the data off manually on each smart phone. For instance, on my I-phone I would go to settings, general, cellular. Then I would turn it to off.  To do this on other phones, you would go to settings.  It would be somewhere in there.  I keep my data off because I use wifi most of the time.  I only use a little data if I am out and about, and I only use it to download e-mail.  I turn it on to download e-mail and then turn it off immediately.  I have the 300 mb data plan.
