I would spend a couple hours or so in the store playing with both phones. You are making a 2 year commitment, might as well take a 'Free' test drive first.
And yes, you should care about Apple releasing a new phone as the iPhone 5 may get discounted, the new Phone may start at 32gb for $199, or you may miss out on a feature (such as 20% more battery life) you did not even know about.
