"Greedy scam"

Greed is considered a "selfish and excessive desire for more of something than is needed" and a scam is an attempted swindling by means of trickery. Of the latter, Verizon Wireless has made it clear from the get-go that there would be a $30 upgrade fee and never hid this (in fact, it was everywhere from tech sites to Yahoo). Of the former, "greed" would imply that they are not using the money for improvements, wages, expansions, and whathaveyou, but merely storing and stockpiling; this is a bad assessment. While I do not like the upgrade fee and the fact that I have had to pay for it twice or even the fact that I would lose my unlimited data the next time I upgrade, I cannot believe, even for a moment, that they have been anything but direct about their intent to cause these things to occur.

As for the phones, look at the SIII or the new Razr line-up they just released. The Note is like the Hummers of the cell phone world - they are only symbols of excess and pomp.
