Phones are not way more expensive than they used to be. They are the same price. We were just used to paying the discounted price and signing contracts so we were unaware of the full retail price of devices. Because of the changes in how we buy we are starting to become more aware. Also, it is to get us to understand that we are responsible for our own devices. I mean, we have always been but people thought that because they signed a contract that carriers should make sure their broken devices were replaced or fixed. Since we no longer sign a contract that we will keep service for 2 years it is becoming more apparent that consumer are responsible for providing the device. What we do sign is an agreement to pay the full cost of the phone over a 24 month period. You aren't held to the service and you can pay the device balance at any time.
