Just wanted to verify my thinking here ...

My son will be in St. Croix (US Virgin Islands) for a week and based on the information that shows on this page it appears that he can text to/from U.S. numbers under our existing message plan at no additional fee, i,.e. about half way down the page it says:

Domestic rates per your plan or as part of your messaging bundle - Text messaging while in:

• United States, Canada, US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico

so, that should mean that he can text us and his friends back here in the states under our unlimited text messaging plan ... assuming he has coverage of course, or are their other considerations?
