You could do an assumption of liability where you take over the line from your folks.  You'd keep your number, but you'd have a deposit and credit check I'm sure.  If your line is out of contract you could upgrade, but if you go buy another phone, like a smartphone, you'll have to change plans since smartphones require a data plan.  In the end, you'll have your line and number and a new account for yourself after qualification.  AOL process can be found here:  My Verizon | Verizon Wireless
