The Blackberry OS is actually incapable of displaying graphics in text messages. There is an application in Blackberry App World called Emoticons that gives you a selection of premade emoticons, but they all display as text.
Only Blackberry messanger and the Instant Messaging apps can display actual graphics for emoticons.
Sorry, I didn't have the answer you wanted. 
Maybe in OS 5.0 this will change.
