I was having the same issue too.  I have brought my phone in to the Verizon store and the manager there figured out the reason why.  I went out of town recently and after that my phone have been overheating and hot all the time and my battery will run out with no reasons and no apps running.  I found out that when you go out of town and there is no Verizon's tower the network on your phone automatically switched to to "Global" which will work overtime and extra hard to get service that makes your phone overheat.  The manager told me that the phone is not smart enough to switch the network back to LTE when you return back home.  To check your settings if it is in the correct network.  Go to Settings > More settings > Moblie Network > Network mode > make sure the LTE>CDMA is selected.  Once I changed this, the phone never overheat or anything. Hope this helps.
