Thanks for the reply - the blog post I read it in left more questions than answers. I see people selling unlocked phones on classified sites like craiglsist, ebey etc that are private users and those offering to unlock a phone as a service and wondered if you were participating in a crime to allow them to unlock a phone you bought from someone other than a service provider.

I suspect that a number of them thought they were making an informed decision and wanted something basic either because they couldn't afford a data plan or would not use it opted for a phone from their basic lineup - or trusted an e-mail or phone call from a verizon salesperson only to find themselves with junk and joining the majority. Others were probably thought as another poster mentioned, that people are more likely to post a negative review even though every phone would have mostly negative reviews if that theory was correct - so they took a chance thinking that it might be a quality product, and that their purchase would be the exception - but it's true that they shouldn't believe any salespersons recomendation without researching the product elsewhere. Guess I'm playing the devils advocate in feeling sorry for the little old ladies that are victims of believing that companies stand behind their products and wouldn't continue to carry products that left so many others unsatisfied - junk.

Hello  - I was surfing the other day a came across a post about a recent law change that was no doubt a result of pressure from service lobbyist - and it said that if you have service and unlock a phone that it is now a felony? When you search for unlocked phones that can be used for any provider or because some carriers limit features - they are sold everywhere - and by nearly every major retailer advertising buy your "unlocked phone" here. Is it referring to subsidized phones or if someone bought an unlocked phone to use for verizon service - should they be concerned?

Or they cold offer a better quality product in their basic lineup that would get consistent positive reviews instead of taking advantage of the uniformed buyers that continue to buy their products thinking that they'll have better results than the numerous others that rate it as junk. I suspect that a lot of the "cheapskates" that buy them are little old ladies wanting something basic and reliable - but who am I to question a company that would intentionally sell them junk instead.

I have a data plan with the razr2 - but it's an alltel plan which is why i asked about verizon basic phones that can be tethered to replace it before the data network is retired. It can be tethered, and even connected through bluetooth but with reduced signal strength - to be used as a modem. I considered the usb dongle option - but I want the option to use the phone (or it's verizon replacement) for calls IF needed - but maybe buying the same phone off ebay will allow me to keep my plan as-is even after the alltel network is retired even though I get conflicting information from customer service, complicated by the fact that my data plan was added as a separate feature to my call plan not as a set package. Worse case scenario is they drop the data and I just pay them $20 a month to keep the number and my minute plan - best case I replace my phone with the same made for verizon and continue occasional use as i have been and will always have the option to upgrade to one of their shared plans and add data later.

I had a similar problem with the older blackberrys and would have to agree with SuzyQ that sometimes it's a result of having too many aps open in the background. Some have limited ram and when mine froze - I had to take battery out for a second and let it reboot.. Hope things work out with your replacement - 7 lemons - thats just pure bad luck. I'm looking forward the the bb10 being introduced soon - just wish the q10 was coming before the z10. Doubt I'll use verizon for service on it though - but we'll see.
So the motorola razr2 v9m is not a basic phone and is a smartphone?

I already have a smartphone with a different carrier that I'm happy with and at a better price.  In addition - as I mentioned - I'm happy with the other phone I use for verizon also - it's solid and reliable - but because it's not verizon branded am looking at other basic phone options. I don't care about  renuing contracts if the service works - I keep it for decades anyway. Don't care about paying cash for a phone if it's required to keep a plan I'm happy with even if I seldom use it because eventually I'm saving money, but have never liked paying more than I have to for anything or buying something with features I know i'd likely never use. Verizon aught to send me Christmas cards since I'm the perfect customer for their profitability - I pay for years for services I seldom use, haven't made a call or sent a text in months with their services so it's like free money to them. Your welcome verizon - we'll see if you can keep my business in a couple weeks as long as there are no surprises when I replace my current phone and which of your conflicting customers service information turns out to be true.

Anyone else find it comical when verizon customer support provides a solution suggestion after the poster has explained numerous times that they've already tried the exact same steps earlier themselves? At least it's consistent with the responses you get over the phone when you call. Hey maybe you should adjust the time-out setting and be sure not to block the sensor ............ just a thought.

It would be difficult for them to say they weren't aware of the problems when so many are posting complaints and returning them - but they continue to sell them anyway. If 88 out of 100 people recommend against buying a product because of the issues they have with it - I'd debate it qualifies as being know "junk" any day - and although I appreciate your playing the devils advocate if they defend their position claiming ignorance that they're selling complete junk - there are 12 people of each 100 sold that get one that works as advertised.

With a company so large - you'll find some of each - some great knowledgeable people, some incompetent idiots that guess at an answer or were improperly trained, and some that are outright liars in the sales department that will tell you anything you want to hear to make a sale, push an upgrade, or get you off the phone because it's two minutes till lunch time. Roll the dice and hope to hit what you need at the lowest level - or ask to speak to a supervisor or someone from the customer retention department and you'll have a better chance of speaking to someone that knows how to use toilet paper without reading the instructions. Good luck - hope you get that new phone.

My phone isn't shot, in fact I have another in new condition in case it died but when they made them - apparently they're made to work forever - can't say that about a lot of newer products - but it doesn't have the features of more modern smartphones and all the built in apps - but for my usage always worked great. Kind of a shame I'll have to throw then in a drawer now. As for my plan - I have an old alltel plan and they're doing away with the alltel data network (end of March) to save costs since they now own most of alltel and have for several years now. I think you're right - I'll just go on ebay and buy the exact same phone that's verizon branded.

I"d agree they probably do buy in bulk to realize savings in volume and probably contract to buy a certain number of phones to get discounts, later show the retail price and have new customers or those upgrading pay near what they did in bulk to resell as subsidized - but just having a stockpile because the product is junk - doesn't mean they need to sell them to unsuspecting customers. I'm sure their contracts to purchase also have a usability or defective product clause and they could just ship the garbage back. To keep my restaurant analogy - if I ordered a thousand pounds of shrimp and later found it was spoiled - I wouldn't continue to sell it to customers just because I have it in inventory. My supplier would receive an immediate returned shipment with an opportunity to make it right and in the meanwhile it would be off the menu - but verizon says - so what - sell it anyway.

I received an email today from Verizon that refers to a “recent conversation” even though the question I’ve asked several times, the same question about a basic phone numerous times has yet to be answered – and the email suggests I purchase one of three phones shown.  A pantech hotspot, a samgung Brightside, and a casino ravine 2 (apparently considered a smartphone) – but in reviewing features available and customer reviews - have to wonder why verizon would try to sell this junk to me – or anyone for that matter. Why does Verizon continue to sell products when there is a clear indication from reviews that MOST of those purchased were riddled with problems and MOST reviews were strongly AGAINST? Seems like a customer service nightmare that could be avoided by offering better products. If I had a restaurant and all the review of certain menu options were that everyone hated them – I’d change the menu – but of course the customers wouldn’t be stuck in a contract to eat what they hate for two years. The Pantech 12% recommend  - 88% say it's junk The Samsung britesise 30 % recommend - 70% say is junk The casio - considered smarphone not basic but stiil most recomment agaist.

Thanks for the reply - but I meant through verizon ( I read in another post that someone wanted to replace a basic phone but it was a different type, an evo 3 or something and someone from verizon mentioned buying retired phones) The problem is the basic phones they offer apparently (according to a response to another question) do not offer the the same functions of what I have for tethering capability. In other words - they tell me I need to buy a basic phone but don't carry what they're telling me to buy.

If that's the case - that none offered by verizon to to replace an old razr 2 v9m that i currently use (I'm pretty sure it would be considered a basic phone even though it cost so much when introduced) - then the verizon customer service is telling me to change devices to one that they don't offer anyway to keep my current plan. I guess to get an answer from someone at verizon - I need to re-ask the question - "why would verizon customer service tell me I needed to get a product they don't carry to keep my current plan'?

I currently pay less than $50 now - which is the reason I've kept the service for backup. Even combining what I pay for Verizon and the other plan with unlimited talk, text, and data is less that $90. I've never tested the "unlimited" data limits of the prepaid to see if it gets throttled after using 2g or 4g or used as a hotspot since wifi is available most places for my laptops - but I've never been much of a data hog anyway. In addition - Verizon does have better coverage in some areas than the prepaid service - like when i'm out on the lakes - and I'd like to keep a limited minute call plan to be able to make calls if an emergancy when I'm miles from shore. unfortunately my question continues ................ basic phones with tethering capabilities?
