you can download the manual at : http://wirelesssupport.verizon.com/phones/index.html?p=3926&t=2&m=6   and you download vz access manager from: http://vzam.net

the verizon mifi can be directly tethered via USB cable to the Cradlepoint MBR1200. when used with the MBR1200's optional high gain WiFi antennas, i've seen over 400ft of wifi range to/from the router. wall/home construction and nearby electrical interference may affect your usable wifi range. using the mbr1200 with high gain antennas, you shouldn't need anything else.

Network Extender does not support Verizon Wireless Mobile Broadband (EVDO) data speeds, that means if you recommend the network extender to a MiFi user, they won't see EVDO speeds. just slower 1xrtt.

is this laptop you are having issues with, one that you used with your mifi back at home? perhaps you have told the mifi to allow only connections to "wifi G" equipment, and your laptop is only "wifi B" capable? if so, change the mifi to allow both/either B and/or G and try again?   just a shot in the dark... hope it helps.

do you have one USB modem or data device and want to have two computers get online? if so, check out this article: http://evdoinfo.com/tip24   if you have two USB modems or data devices and want to improve cell signal to both, you may need a wireless signal amplifier.

the best solution is to replace that linksys with a cradlepoint cellular router like the MBR1000   you can tether the mifi via USB cable to the MBR1000 and then use it as the house router.   the printer you have will connect to the MBR1000 via ethernet connection.   when its time to hit the road, you just unplug the MiFi from MBR1000 and away you go.

answering your 2nd question first: vzaccess manager is pulling usage numbers from same source the website does.   skype's website says video can use as much as 384kb/s: http://tr.im/EmZN   (generously) rounded off, that comes out to about 3 megabytes a minute, or about 180 megabytes an hour.   if you did an hour a DAY, 30 days a month, you'd be pushing the 5GB limit and probably head into overage charges.   so... stay under an hour a day and you should be fine.

If you only need a single ethernet port, check out the inexpensive http://j.mp/ctr350   but since you are moving video, i'd suggest the more powerful onboard processor of the http://j.mp/mbr1000   both are built from the ground up as "cellular routers" -- not cable/dsl   you would not need VZAM with these... they manage the connection to verizon network themselves.
if it were me, i'd hold onto it as a backup. in case my mifi ever died, i'd swap ESN back to USB727 so i have less downtime.

the speeds you can get are dependent primarily on the bandwidth available from the cell tower you connect to, and your mifi's signal to the tower. you may want to do some testing to see if your lack of speed is directly related to strength of signal.   if you have good/great signal, its entirely possible the cell tower you are connected to is overloaded, causing your speed issues.   if you determine signal is not the issue, try driving to a more populous city area and see if no matter where you go to find good signal, your speeds always suck. to me, that would indicate a faulty mifi and verizon would have a hard time arguing with you.   its probably best not to use "bars" to judge signal. read about testing via "RSSI" at bottom of this article: http://j.mp/boostmifi

if your desktop computer does not have wifi, an easy solution is to buy a USB wifi adapter for the desktop.   if you prefer to hard wire the desktop, you may want to look at one of the cradlepoint routers like the MBR1000. you could tether the MiFi to the MBR1000 which would provide you with ethernet ports and much larger WiFi N range.
