Over the past month I've been running five phones all with the same apps and app use (but one) and the same charge conditions. All the phones had "normal moderate use"  and signal strength. Here are the results:   1. Older, Samsung S3 with 4.4.2 ,  12 to 14 hours use. 2. Older, HTC One V with Jelly Bean, 10 to 12 hours use.  3. Samsung S5 with 4.4.4,  18 to 24 hours use. 4. Samsung S5 with first install of Lollipop 5.0,  4 to 5 hours. 5. Clean Factory reset Samsung S5 (no added apps, just stock)  7 to 12 hours. Note use run-time for number 3 phone was excellent.
As Snn5 posted there are known software issue with the S6 line and I would recommend a replacement as most of the refurbish units have been corrected with a re-flash.
DON"T  !!!

Auto update notification will  continue to alert and display in the notification panel, simply tap and skip the software update.  Do not tap ON UPDATE unless you desire to install.  While not fully corrected there has been very slight improvement made in this second release of Lollipop 5.0. All user that installed 5.0 Lollipop update must wait for Lollipop version 5.1.0 update to regain more normal use of their phone . There has been NO official word or date given for a 5.1 update by Verizon, Samsung or Google.

"Truer Words Were Never Spoken" ,  Lollipop is as you said an epic disaster and continues to grow bigger each day that passes.
Can't be done without voiding any warranty or insurance you may have, and DO NOT tap UPDATE !
That should no longer be the norm. Far to many problems and unhappy customers already.    SAMSUNG GALAXY LOLLIPOP UPDATE     April 15 2015 in Android

SAMSUNG GALAXY LOLLIPOP UPDATE NOTE    Do to the multiple ongoing problems with the original Lollipop 5.0 version S5 update, certain software program changes have been made by some major carriers, Verizon is one I've been told. Forced auto install of version 5.0 release 2 of Lollipop will not take place, it can be deferred. It will however continue to alert and display in the notification panel, simply tap and skip the software update.  Do not tap ON UPDATE unless you desire to install.  While it’s a known fact that release number 2 WILL NOT solve the many problems that came with the first 5.0 release, it does address some issues. Two main issue are the memory leak and battery usage problem that were included in the first 5.0 version.  While not fully corrected there has been slight improvement made in this second release. All S5 user that installed the first 5.0 Lollipop update must wait for Lollipop version 5.1.0 update to regain more normal use of their S5 phone again. There has been NO official word or date given for a 5.1 update by Verizon, Samsung or Google.  BOC4 is the latest current update release to Galaxy S5 users. Galaxy Class
Yes and most all bad, 5.0 with S5 has become a very big problem for all concerns.

Don't cave in and do the update unless you want the many headaches that come with it.  If you feel you must do the update, than go with a minimum of doing 2 FDR...not one and wipe it clean. The biggest hit to your phone will be SLOW  performance and lag time of certain apps and that is only the beginning.

bearone21, you got a re-coded corrected version of the original 5.0 release. There was a memory leak issue causing  high battery drain and  incorrect code programing in the first 5.0 update. The 5.1 version should solve most all the problems if Google and Verizon can ever get together on a release.
