You can't see what it is for security but you can set one up or change it under the security settings. If you've never changed it it's usually the last 4 digits of your phone's number.

Since you can see them elsewhere on your phone that's good! Under your settings and contacts do you see import options?

I used it similarly when I lived on the beach because there was a big hill behind my house blocking the signal.
