Your VZAccess is too OLD.   go to http://www.vzam.net download the latest software. Uninstall the decades old from CD. And install the new one.

On 4G devices yes it is as easy as switching the SIM card. The device boots with the SIM card data settings that have been provisioned on it.   If you want to CHANGE the plan you can do so on vzw.com my account and do it yourself or call tech support and based on the SIM card serial # (phone # attached to it, same thing) they will change what-ever plan is on it.

You call VZW with the SIM card serial# (IMSI#) to activate the SIM card.   If you bought this at a store/vzw.com this already was done for you.   VZW has overlaid their ENTIRE CDMA network with a GSM LTE R9 network.   All future devices /w LTE are GSM based.   After that is done all you need to do is to boot the device /w SIM card and it does the rest automatically.   You CANNOT use WiFi only on the T-Bolt unless you do a special engineering debug mode procedure that is not mean't for regular people and I don't recommend it and you won't get any support with it.   If you are transferring service from a old phone # to a new one once the number is ported the old device is simply deactivated from a usage scenario.   (If you try to call /w old phone device you will get a recorded message of deactivated device blah blah blah, similar with data with no page, no internet connection on 3g.)   And then boot the new phone.   Once activated (<1 hour) you can use the WiFi on the Thunderbolt. On the Droid the WiFi /w activation status DOES NOT MATTER.

You are MOST LIKELY at the edge of a cell site.   Here's a good test: Drive near a cell site and test again.   See if you have full 4G speeds 5Mbit+.   If yes that's your problem which won't be solved until VZW builds more 4G towers which takes time because every single 4G tower requires fiber back-haul.

Ok so you wanted the ENGINEERING answer of Alcatel-Lucent & Ericsson in markets answer (the 2 engineering companies & SUPPLIERS to VZW's LTE network in the US):   VZW LTE network in the US is LTE-FDD.   TDD is being used in Asia because it's cheaper to deploy and more flexible.   Anyways the two are SO CLOSE that in the future the only difference is a worldmode LTE modem. Inser the 4G VZW US SIM card and you can roam all you want. I'm not a business person so I'll let those people work out the business specifics.   VZW has *SUPERIOR* frequency band of 700MHz for in-building propagation, etc.   The Japanese DoCoMo deployment is similar to VZW's in the US.   Continuous spectrum is *EXTREMELY* expensive, see how VZW spent $5 billion USD to buy spectrum and another $5-10 Billion in the running right now to deploy it!?

pcm, the SOS basically means that you have access to 911 in North America and 119 in Europe EMERGENCY SERVICES ONLY and your phone is working properly but FAILED NETOWRK AUTHENTICATION with the 3G roaming SIM card IMSI (serial#).   Most likely someone at Verizon entering into their computer system the WRONG NUMBER of the SIM CARD # into their global roaming systems.   You need to call VZW Global Support and open the back of your phone, remove the battery and pull the SIM card out.    On the back of the Vodafone-VZW 3G roaming SIM card is a #.    RELAY THAT *EXACT* NUMBER to the VZW CS agent and they will make sure the EXACT NUMBER is in the systems.   When you activate the global roaming service the ORIGINAL NUMBER OF THE ORIGINAL ONE SHIPPED IN THE MANUFACTURED BOX IS INCLUDED.   IF FOR SOME REASON YOU DIDN"T USE THAT ONE AND GOT A NEW 3G ROAMING SIM (INTERNATIONAL) FROM VZW YOU NEED TO HAVE THE SIM CARD IMSI # UPDATED WITH VZW CS!

The fix for this is to install the latest version of VZAccess from www.vzam.net. After it runs let it update your SIM cards IMS settings to the latest. It should work without disconnects now. If it prompts you to update the firmware, DO IT. Then reboot. Please do this at least once on Windows because the firmware update only runs on Windows. Then you can reboot and install the latest version of VZAccess on Mac if you are using a Mac.

marjtripp, you would hve to get your 9650 unlocked from VZW so it takes ANY SIM card of ANY carrier in the world. By default VZW sold phones are "locked" to VZW so it only takes the VZW international 3G roaming SIM card. This is due to the contract and price subsidy. VZW advanced support will unlock it for you as long as you meet a few conditions if I remember they are that you paid your bill on time for the last 6 months and that you understand the conditions (no support from VZW as your using a different carrier's SIM card/service on the phone obviously). You are not violating the warranty as the unlocking process is RIM approved and is built-in at manufacture.    One quick note: Before you travel make sure you have the latest SOFTWARE updated on your BB. This is quite simple to update, just install BB Desktop Manager on your computer. Then download the latest VZW BB 9650 release for your BB here: http://www.vzam.net/ (You can do it directly from RIM too, same file but the VZ webiste is a whole complete package aka making it a faster download).   In fact once your phone is unlocked it is PERMENENTLY UNLOCKED. and you can (VZW marketing will hate me for this but this is widely known in the industry): Even switch carriers in the US by putting a AT&T or T-Mobile SIM card in there and use their service. You will only get 2G service as your world-phone only has the 2G 850/1900 bands in the US. It has 3G for out-wide of the US though. I actually know a few business people who do this for maximum coverage (Verizon AND AT&T in the SINGLE VZW BB 9650, when in CDMA mode their using their VZW account provisioned in the MEID, when in GSM/WCDMA mode their AT&T phone number will be used). He has 2 US phone numbers on 2 carriers (Verizon on CDMA, AT&T on GSM) in one phone from VZW. This is mainly in the rare case that VZW coverage sucks he falls-back to AT&T GSM/EDGE. (And yes you can put the AT&T APN settings into the VZW BB, the future of hardware/software is like Windows, it's all about open interoperability and standards).   T-Mobile actually sells US SIM only voice/data plans for this purpose.
