Will calls to me in Canada be treated as long distance?
MARIEJOSEEPAQUET

Hi Folks,

I recently signed up our family for the new verizon plan which includes Canada.  My son going to university there this year it was great for us to be able to use our phones on both side of the border as we do here.   Question- I understand that when I am in Canada and call local/ or US it is treated as a local call, but when my friend called me while I was in Canada it was treated as a long distance call. I was expecting that being in Canada when a canadian calls me it would be local for them as well.  Can you please clarify how you negociated the deal with the Canadian carriers.  Thanks!!

This question would be better suited if you called Verizon, but long story short is if their plan does not include calling an American number then they will get charged. It has nothing to do With how Verizon allows it. If they call frequently enough maybe they can set up a google voice account and use that to call, or maybe the Whatsapp app.

Agree with pherson on how it works.

You have an American number, it doesn't matter where you are, the number must route through Verizon in the USA to figure out where in the world you are. So your Canadian friend must dial international long distance to the US even if you are sitting next to him having tea in Victoria at the Empress.

Thanks Everyone, I thought that Verizon would also be reviewing this forum.  I get it but Verizon told me when I signed up that when Canadians called me if I was in Canada it would be local call.  So it kinda defeats the purpose for me, but will take that up with them.  If you are curious, I did ask them how it works as it was one of my criteria in choosing.

Local for you; yes; local for them, no. Verizon has no way of controlling another companies billing procedures.

You will be amazed how many reps at Verizon don't understand. You'll get better answers here most of the time. It really doesn't matter what they said, since it is another company charging the long distance fees. Verizon has no control.

When your on the New Verizon Plan, calling to and from Canada is free. If a person who has a Canadian number with a carrier (Bell Mobility, Data & Audio-Visual Enterprises Wireless, Fido, Rogers Wireless,b Saskatel, Telus) then they need a plan/feature with them to call to US based numbers. VZW doesn't have any control over that.

Thanks all for the feedback, I will call Verizon as suggested to clarify.  For this audience I did ask the question direct before signing up.  "Will it be long distance for local Canadians calling me given I have a US number.  The answer was clear - No as I am on the international plan and in Canada it will be a local call for them as they have a reciprocal agreement to recognize us as local when in Canada.  I did not question as to the how, but will ask the same question again.  This plan is only half good in that case.

there was no grey and the person actually understood the question, but alas all is not what is seems!!!

I know what they were thinking....

Only way (just like our numbers for the US) for it to be a 'local call' would be by the number itself having a local area code/Canadian dialing pattern. North America (Canada/US) have the same dialing code (+1) but this DOES NOT make it a local call.

I travel to Mexico and Canada a lot, can I use my phone like I do at home?

Yes, you can. It's never been easier or more economical to use your phone in Mexico and Canada just like you do in the US. If you have the XL data size or larger, you can make calls, send texts and use data within Mexico and Canada:

  • Unlimited calls
  • Unlimited messages
  • Use your domestic plan data

If you have the S, M or L data sizes, you can get these benefits with TravelPass for Mexico and Canada for just $2/day.
