Unless the OP ported the number to another carrier. Then the ETF would be unavoidable. However, there are carriers paying that via giftcard but I don't know if that would apply if the new account was not under the same name as the Verizon account.  Any company will charge you an ETF if you break contract, but they cannot charge you simply for porting the number out.
