Switch phone numbers with a family member on a different plan

Hello!

I have a Verizon cell phone plan and my mother has a separate plan. A few years ago my mother got a phone that she absolutely hated so I agreed to take her phone and she took mine. What ended up happening is that she has a phone that I technically pay for each month under my plan and I have a phone that she pays for under her plan. We are both at the end of our contracts now but I want to switch the phone numbers to the proper plans so we pay for our own phones. This is especially important since she wants to cancel  her account and go to a different carrier but I want to stay with Verizon.

How do I go about doing this? If she cancels her plan is there a way I can keep the number but bring it to my account and how will this affect my upgrade? I think my mother would also like to bring her current number (the phone under my account) to her new carrier.

Thank you very much for any help you can give me!

You would have to do two assumptions of liability - one for each number being transferred to a different account.  The relinquishing party would call in to authorize it then the assuming party would call in or go into a store to accept and have the number transferred.  Keep in mind there could be safety deposits required on either side since a new person will be legally/financially responsible for the line.  Also there can not be a past due on the accounts to process the AOLs.

I missed the part where you mentioned one number going to a different carrier.  You would just do an AOL for the line staying with verizon to move it into the proper account then she can port the other number to the new carrier if she has the account number and pin for the account it is currently on.

When I do this will I maintain the current contract terms or does Verizon see it as a new contract and then I lose my ability to purchase a new phone at whatever its promotional price is?

If the line is out of contract, it will stay out of contract upon being transferred to the other account.  AOL's don't create new contracts.

crelin, I can fill you in on what you missed. She can assume responsibility of her line. Once it's transferred into her name, she will be financially responsible for completing the contractual agreement. If she ports her number to another carrier before her contract expires, then she will be billed an Early Termination Fee. Hi irishpat87,

Let's explore options to complete the number swap! As indicated by others (thanks!), doing an Assumption of Liability is a way to accomplish what you want to do and since you are at the end of your contracts (as per your original post), contract length carries over as is. I trust that this will answer your questions fully. Please visit this link http://vz.to/187wQRK for details on the Assumption of Liability process.
