Does integrated messaging work if my phone is off?

I'm curious: Can I send a message from, say, my laptop, if my phone is off or is the phone required to be on and not in airplane mode to send messages? Thanks!

Integrated Messaging synchronizes between the devices.  I don't think messaging from one is dependent on the other(s) being powered on.
