It started Friday the 17th of Jan, and I spoke to a Samsung rep because the problem started after their massive update that morning.
We did all the typical stuff: rebooting, deleting caches and data, etc.
We even did what I believe is called a hard reboot; hold down all 3 buttons (you know the drill).... and then wiping the cache partition before rebooting the system. 

Let me know if you have some other ideas.  If you would like and can show me how, I will attach a copy of the chat transcript of that morning.
Thanks VW Support for offering to help; but I think the trouble may have been in that update.
