I currently have a basic phone on my family's plan, which is a basic unlimited talk/text plan without a data plan. Ahora que me independicé, quiero tener mi propia cuenta y a la vez actualizarme a un smartphone con un plan de data de línea individual. My main thing is that I want to keep my current phone number. What would the best way to go about doing this? Is it possible to do this without upgrading to a smartphone on my parent's account before splitting off? (E.g., could I make a new account, buy the smartphone I'd like, then port the number from my parent's Verizon account to my new one and set that as my new phone's number) My parents specifically do not want to have/pay for a data plan.

You could do an assumption of liability where you take over the line from your folks. You'd keep your number, but you'd have a deposit and credit check I'm sure. If your line is out of contract you could upgrade, but if you go buy another phone, like a smartphone, you'll have to change plans since smartphones require a data plan. In the end, you'll have your line and number and a new account for yourself after qualification. AOL process can be found here: My Verizon | Verizon Wireless
Thanks for the reply. I got the phone over two years ago so I believe it's off-contract now. (The Verizon webpage says it's eligible for an upgrade)
So if I have this right, the process would be: AOL on my line to a new account -> end up with current phone on a basic talk/text plan -> buy new smartphone and switch plans to a new plan that included data?
