My Droid is factory as well.  I updated when the phone suggested because the (2) previous updates have helped with the phone (especially when I could not end the call and had to remove the battery after each call because the screen would freeze).  It was the third update that got me.  I have/run very few apps on my phone.  I have downloaded several recommended by friends, but typically delete them as I loose interest easily.
