I finally found a way to do this and it saves a ton of memory. It is explained at http://www.nathanix.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=10. In summary, you install the rar file that contains all the default ringtones to you memory card in the ringtone folder. Someone went to the trouble of converting all the ringtones to mp3 and mid files. You can then delete the net_rim_bb_medialoader_ringtones_8330.cod file using BlackBerry Swiss Army Knife. You have to go back into your profiles and select the tones you want for your different alerts and notifications. It is worth the effort in the free memory you save.
