It is easy to do, but my questions were: would it free up memory & would they show up in both places if I restored from a backup.

To move files from BB memory to your SD card download BeamExplorer (free).  It gives you the option to choose multiple files and copy them to the SD card.  You can then use MaxMem @ www.berrycoder.com to delete default ringtones.  Hopes this helps.
