You can most definitely port your number to Google Voice, but GV charges $20 for it and you'll get an ETF with your carrier if you do it.

I wish every carrier had the same thing as Sprint's just-launched integration. I just set that up yesterday, it took like 5 minutes and my GV number is now my phone number, super easy to do, no charges, and the integration works great.
