I finally figured out how to put custom ringtones on my HTC Trophy with the Mango update...WP7.5, V7.1.7720.
Find the ringtone you want. I use phonezoo.com to make my ringtones from a song.
Put the ringtone in Mymusic (or the folder that Zune uses for your Collection)
Open Zune and plug your phone into your computer
Go to Collection and find the ringtone
Right Click on the ringtone and select "Edit"
An Edit Song Info box pops up.
In the Genre box, type the word Ringtone.
Drag the ringtone to your phone
Go to your phone setting and Ringtones & Sounds
You'll find the new ringtone on your list and ready to use
Hip Hip Hooray!

There are a couple of restrictions that you may be unaware of:
1. WMA or MP3 only
2. File must be less than 1 MB in size
3. Audio must be less than 30 seconds in length
4. as you said, the genre must be Ringtone

I am a bit frustrated because I have followed all of the instructions to the tee but the ringtones end up in the music + video section with the genre of ringtone, but they do not end up in the ringtones section. I would appreciate any help I can get.....I have an HTC Trophy

@dthomasberger - make sure you type "ringtone" correctly because that will prevent it from showing up in your ringtone section of settings. Here is a detailed guide to creating ringtones for WP7.5: http://pocketnow.com/windows-phone/how-to-make-custom-ringtones-for-windows-phone-mango

I figured out how to get the ringtones, but is there a way to transfer (Tones, Alerts) in the same way? I tried it under "tone" and "alert" in genre box but no luck.

I haven't seen any documentation on that, and haven't tried it for myself. Have you tried using a ringtone as an alert?
