what is an upgrade these days?

i was sitting on hold with verizon customer service and heard -- "check and see if you are eligible for an upgrade" -- what does that even mean these days?

ANY ANSWER would be great -- in the past it used to mean a new phone with a new 2 year contract or renewed contract for under a few hundred dollars.  now the phones are $500 - $800 plus

i'm confused at the lingo these days.

THANKS

The phones were always $500 to $800 plus. The contract pricing just hid the reality of it.

Phones were always 500-800 bucks.  They do not do 2 year contracts anymore.  In the past a 2 year contract meant, we will give you the phone for a reduced price, you can not get a new phone at discount till the 2 years is up, and if you cancel before the 2 years is up you will pay an early termination fee.    Now they offer financing.  You get charged the full 600-800 bucks, but they split it up into monthly payments with no interest.   You can cancel your service at any time with no early termination fee, however you would be responsible for the remaining balance of your phone.  They went away from the 2 year contract because other companies went away with it, and people complained about being stuck in a 2 year contract when there phones went dead after 12 to 24 months.

Ok-

I guess technically it shouldn't be called an upgrade, it should just say your eligible for a new phone.   in order to be eligible for an "upgrade" you would need to be out of a 2 year contract, not currently in the middle of an installment plan, or on certain devises have half the phone paid off in witch case you can give them your current phone in good condition, and get a new phone.

Technically your not really upgrading anything, its more so your eligible for a new phone.

eligible for a "new phone" only has to do with people who do a 2 year payment plan -- if you buy it with that 1 time cost, you are always "eligible for a new phone or upgrade" -- right?

If you purchase a new phone at the full retail price in one lump sum then, yes, you are still "eligible" for an upgrade.
