My phone is pretty dead and I'm in a bind. I have a week until my upgrade and have held out this long but am leaving for vacation in couple days and would prefer a working phone. Should I wait and upgrade with Verizon of try the new Tmobile? K

When you say try the new Tmobile, do you mean port your number out to Tmobile and cancel your Verizon contract?
If so, you should realize you would have an ETF with Verizon.
If you last upgraded by purchasing a smartphone, the ETF would be $160 ($350 - (19 months completed of your contract) x $10).
If you upgraded last by purchasing a basic phone, it would be $80.

His upgrade date would not be 20 months. But 24 months since verizon made the dates now 24 months.
The customer would still owe a small etf for leaving a week sooner.
Actually $110 I believe for a smartphone.

This is not true YET.
The upgrade date has been pushed back to 24 months for contracts signed on or after Jan 1, 2012. That would make anyone completing 20 months on or after September 1, 2013 having to wait the full 24 months.
The OP states he is 1 week from upgrade which would put him in the first week of August, meaning he last signed his contract the 1st week of December of 2011. He would be able to upgrade after 20 months.

Really, I was under the impression everyone had to wait 24 months.

Posters quibbling over the OP's upgrade date? That doesn't answer his question. If he is going on vacation for 2 weeks, I would suggest his going ahead and trying out a T-Mo phone while holding on to his Verizon account and see if T-Mo's coverage is adequate where he lives and travels. If so, then cancel the Verizon account when he returns, assuming he returns within T-Mobile's grace period. If not, then he will still be free to return the T-Mobile phone and upgrade on Verizon.
Sounds like a no-brainer to me.

Gee I am glad you have the brains here. The solution sounds great but if the OP wants to keep his number at TMobile from his verizon account his port even for the 14 days will cancel his verizon service way before he gets back from vacation.
If he accepts a new line of service at TMobile with a new number that would be great also, however he may end up with two service providers, yep that is a no brainer.
Now if his actual upgrade date is not on his contract end date the OP ends up paying a high ETF And then goes to TMobile still a very high cost no brainer.
The etf discussion was relevent. Oh last no brainer is OP buys his device from TMobile and pays for the service they use in addition to verizons services.
Thank You for pointing out all those no brainers.

We weren't quibbling over upgrade dates. Just making sure the OP has CORRECT information to help make a decision. This forum is FULL of people who make decisions made on incorrect or incomplete information and then complain that they would NOT have made the same decision had they known what would happen. I was just making sure the OP was aware he would STILL have an ETF even if he waited an extra week until he had an upgrade.
There ARE people who are NOT aware of this and to be hit with this large of a fee when you ASSUME you would have none can make some people quite angry. Having the correct information CAN help him make HIS decision, especially if he would be unwilling to pay an ETF.

I'm actually just going to wait. Verizon has always been reliable to me.
Thanks for the responses.
