Just got a new laptop with 8.1. Have spent hours trying to get on internet with both HP and VZ. I have found that if I go to "settings" "update and recovery" and "recovery" then Advanced start up, I can easily access. It's a shame, but those are the breaks. Eventually (?) VZ will catch up.
Settings - Change PC Settings - Network - Connections
