When was the last time you updated the PRL on the basic phone? Non 4G LTE devices should have the PRL (preferred roaming list) update every so often by dialing *228, option 2.

I did get a new flip phone on 6/23/2017 . a LG terra model . I also have a older SAMSUNG flip phone and it also goes on and off when talking. I hope I don't have an important call to make!!
