What is the use of an in-store appointment?

I am trying to switch my service to Verizon (my wife's idea, not mine.) So, I registered online for an in-store appointment today from 12:30 to 1 pm. When I arrived at 12:35 pm, I was told by the greeter that they were "slammed" and it looks like it would take at least 40 minutes. So I left.

Why even have appointments? Is this a pretty common occurrence?

The only reason I set the appointment is that I went into another Verizon location two weeks ago looking for the new iPhone 6. He said they didn't have any, which I understand. However, he said would contact me each day to let me know if the model I wanted had arrived or not. He has not contacted me since.

Is this the type of customer service I should expect?
