Verizon Wireless No Integrity

I just have to vent about something I recently found out about.  I signed up a few months back as a new customer with Verizon.  I got a 1 gig with unlimited talk and text and the 5C iPhone for $78 per month after taxes.  This was the best deal they had at the time.  I now see they have new plans where I could get the exact same, plus monthly device payment for a 16G iPhone 6 Plus for $10 more before taxes, which is about $20 more after taxes.  I called Verizon after I saw this to ask why they did not offer this a few months ago?  They stated that I was in a legally binding contract and that's what I signed up for.

I am fully aware that I signed the contract and I will adhere to it for it's entire term.  However, that was the best they could offer at the time for some unknown reason and I don't see why I couldn't get something a little better seeing as how they suddenly decided to be so generous for others.  I think it stinks that they would turn around and offer a deal so great and the rest of us are left wondering why they didn't have something better just a few months ago?

I have been a loyal customer in the past to Verizon for years and have completed contracts with them.  I have never had an issue with them before and always thought they had great customer service and coverage.  They still offer the great coverage but I feel they really let me down with the offer.  Had I known they were planning on rolling out a new deal like this, I would have held out a few months.  My only hope now is that I still have free roaming in which case I would make several very long calls that would cost Verizon tons and allows them to terminate my contract at will.  I would rather they work with me and see.  I was even willing to resign to start over.  In the future, I will give other carriers a chance before trying to be loyal to Verizon.  This has soured my view of Verizon Wireless.  I give them a 4 out of 10.

Funny how things change over time. A while back I purchased a 2015 car and a few months later I NOW see that that dealership is offering 2016 cars! I called and asked why they did not offer 2016 cars at the time and they told me I am in a legally binding contract to pay for the car I purchased! The nerve!

Time moves on. Plans change, prices change. You can only purchase what is available at the time of purchase.

I think you missed the point.  I am fully aware of the changes and fully aware of my contract.  That’s why I opened by acknowledging it in the first place. However, take my proposition for example.  I said that I have free roaming.  When you make a call that roams, Verizon agrees to pay another carrier a certain amount per minute for using their towers.  In the past, you may remember having roaming charges.  That was to recover what they had to pay. They started offering free roaming as an incentive for new business and today, it’s the norm.

Now, my contract states that I have free roaming.  So if I were to go to an area that was roaming and place a call to a landline of a friend, it would cost Verizon per minute.  If I wanted to, I could place the call, and have my phone plugged in and set it down and let it stay connected for a few hours.  It would be a huge cost to Verizon.  Under my contract, that’s completely covered.  I guarantee that if I did that, you and everyone else would think I was a jerk for doing so with the intent to cost Verizon a ton of money. However, it’s covered in my contract.

So, my argument isn’t that I feel Verizon has violated their contract.  It’s that I think it’s crappy that they all of the sudden offer this huge deal and then offer nothing to their current customers.  Are they required to under contract?  Of course not.  Am I required to never make them incur costs under contract.  Absolutely not.  Then if we both honor our end of the deal, why would I be the bad guy? I’m only exploiting what I can by a legal contract.  I sure hope that you are ready to back me up if I ever did such a thing.  I feel that wouldn’t be the case.

New plans and deals are rolled out all the time, by every single seller of every single thing in the world. A few months ago the plan offered NOW wasn't available because it didn't exist yet. And a few months before that, the plan you're on wasn't available to offer customers. It really isn't an integrity issue...more of a market evolution issue. Still, $78 for unlimited talk and text and 1 gig of data AND an iPhone 5c is way cheaper than the plan I was offered when I joined Verizon almost 15 years ago. Back then I didn't even get a smartphone offered to me!

Honestly, for me at least, I couldn't care less if you cost Verizon piles of money in domestic roaming. Why should I, rcschnoor, or any other customer care about that? When you got Verizon service, you were given a deal current at that time. You are now accusing Verizon of having no integrity because they didn't offer you a deal that didn't exist. That simply is not an example of poor integrity. Do what you want with your service, no one cares.  However, if we're being completely honest, wouldn't placing a random call simply to exploit your free domestic roaming be showing a real lack of integrity? Integrity: doing the right thing even when no one is looking. Food for thought.

Because Verizon cares about passive-aggressiveness. I guess it's no different than unlimited data users racking up 100GB a month...just cause they can...all the while increasing costs and limiting some features for others.  Cutting off the nose to spite the face.

Flutterfly, it's not a question of if you or anyone cares about Verizon in that situation.  It's about you evaluating the situation.  Of course it would be bad of me in a moral standing to purposely cost them a ton in roaming fees.  Verizon simply states to me over and over, "you signed a legally binding contract."  That's all.  So if I were to ask you how you feel about my situation, you would say just as you do, too bad, you signed it.  But you can't tell me that if you looked at what I would do, you wouldn't say it's wrong.  In fact, you've already stated that.  However, I could fire back with the same explanation as Verizon, "you signed a legally binding contract."  Now, all of you would still consider me the bad guy even though I'm simply staying within my contract.  Snn5 points out that people with unlimited data could rack up 100GB per month just because they can.  First off, every carrier out there use to throttle speeds after a certain amount, as stated in their agreements.  Second, after the contract was up, they could have easily said they aren't allowing unlimited data but they still did.  I know a few who never entered new agreements once theirs expired because they were still getting their old unlimited data.  I can't imagine that a company would keep allowing it and spending ungodly amounts of money to do so.

So again, I only say that while I have fully and openly agreed that I would honor my agreement, I don't have to feel good that they up and slashed costs.  The access fee alone just went from $40 per month to $20.  And no one can say that Verizon just suddenly comes up with these plans out of thin air and immediately implements them.  When I joined my gym years ago, the owner himself told me to wait until next month when he was cutting joining fees in half.  He could have easily let me pay the full fee that I knew was going to be due and he still told me to hold off.  That's great service.  Maybe the folks at the Verizon store had no idea about the upcoming price discount but when I call Verizon direct and talk to them, they know.

I will keep my contract because I believe in honoring my agreements.  But as far as my feelings towards Verizon for being so cold about this, well that's not changing.  I know the meaning of integrity and their actions and attitude are far opposite.  My company has an 87% customer satisfaction rating which in our industry is well above the 65% that is the current overall average.  Cell phone carriers are an average of 35% industry-wide.  We have a high rating because of our core beliefs and values towards our customers.  Every single contract we write is for one year, with no penalty to exit.  We make money hand over fist because customers still love us and our commitment to them.  They pay more for our service because they believe in us and our integrity.  Verizon is a little more spendy and I paid it believing the same.  Unfortunately, I found out different.  It's much harder to do the right thing than it is to do wrong.  Evidence clear.

and still you haven't given us anything to advise on, it seems that you're just wanting to vent as opposed to wanting to understand. $20 is for customers that were out of contract or on the device payment plan. if you were paying $40 before, you'd be paying $40 on the new plans.
