1. I wife has a iPhone 5c 8GB phone. Sadly I have learned by design iPhones do turn off WiFi when they go dormant. So if a download is in progress or information is being back up wirelessly, and the phone goes dormant, it will switch to use cellular data, if it is left on. This information came from an Apple forum, and other sources alike.

2. So in my research of why my wife's phone was using an excessive amount of data usage, I was told to turn off this or disable that. However, that was just a band-aide treatment at best. You can try doing all of that if you believe that it will help. But what did the job for me, was to keep my wife's iPhone connected to a power source, whenever we can.

3. By keep her phone connected to a power source, it kept it from going dormant, and disconnecting from a WiFi network. This is why I purchase her a nine foot power cord to use at home, whenever she can. And this has cause her phone to use data usage now within a normal range.

4. Now as far as myself goes, I have a Droid MAXX 16GB phone. And I have not used any of our shared data usage allowance since 26 October, 2014. And I firmly believe that this is because I do not have an iPhone. ....

That isn't the only way to prevent cellular use.

You can restrict certain apps by turning off cellular data in settings, forcing the phone to use wifi.

WIth almost every IOS update, use of wifi antenna has been effected.  This is a huge problem if the phone indicates wifi connection, but isn't using it for data connection.  This can cause massive data overage.

one of the tests is to turn cell data off and see if you have usable internet connection via wifi.  If you can't connect and use internet with wifi, either your wifi or your phone has a problem.

Yes, I have read about and tried all of that. Yes, that is a good starting point to try in order to address the issue and so forth. Yes, I did restrict certain apps by turning off cellular data in settings, in order to try forcing the phone to use WiFi. However, doing so either did not help in some cases, and in some other cases my wife did not approve of my doing so. But what did the trick for us was connecting my wife's iPhone to a power source, whenever we can. In which case, my wife is happy with that solution. Therefore, I am happy, that she is happy.

ALways a good choice!  Yes plugging in to power is a solution.  Kind of defeats the portability feature of the phone.

If you put the phone in airplane mode, then turn on wifi, does it connect to safari and you tube and function well?

Just for a goof i checked apple's community forum. Customers are still complaining about data overage with the iphone.

It's beyond sad now. It's disgraceful, that a customer's iphone settings are overridden by apple and/or vzw.

Finally!

someone who checks other sources for the truth.  Yes, while Apple needs to fix it, it is an Apple problem, not a carrier problem.  Keep making a fuss Apple fans, they do fix the phones.

I have Samsung Galaxy s4 phones not one Iphone and for anyone who thinks using now 10gb of data since I upped the data to avoid overages in less than three weeks is normal... Think about this...our internet package at home, is 6gb, we run TV's, phones, iPads, laptops, tablets, Xbox,Wii and so on, WE STREAM MOVIES AND MUSIC AND YOU TUBE All day every day and have NEVER, I repeat NEVER used more than 3gb in a month... So I think Verizon calculates data incorrectly on purposed to rip off its customers, because what they are claiming 1 phone on my plan did is use 8gb in a week and a half, is IMPOSSIBLE!

I Agree, your Samsung S4 should not be using so much.

however, you better check your home internet package, it's missing a couple zeros.  There is a reason home internet packages are 150 GB - 300 GB a month, because we all have Xbox, computers and streaming devices and come pretty close to using it up.

I Will say it again, it's the phone.  Either it isn't connected to your wifi, or you have apps running in the background that shouldn't be.  or the phone is faulty.

Test if if it is connected to your wifi By turning cellular off and see if you have usable internet connection.

learn how to restrict usage to wifi on some apps.  Learn how to prevent apps from running in the backgound.
