Transfer Upgrade from iPhone 5 Already With Unlimited Data?

Hello All,

A few months back I got an iPhone 5 with unlimited data by using another line to upgrade, and then swapped the phones. No issues. Now, that iPhone 5 with unlimited line has an available upgrade - could I transfer it to another line and use it without losing unlimited?

I chatted with a helpful Verizon rep today and she said twice that it should be fine, but I wanted to confirm, since I went to a fair amount of effort to keep my unlimited. The chat transcript << has been removed to comply with >>

As long as you pay full price for the upgraded line you keep unlimited. If you purchase a subsidize phone you will lose the unlimited. But I am sure the lady at verizon hopefully told you that.

No, you can't use the upgrade on the line (Line A) with the unlimited data plan for any reason. If you transfer to another person (Line B), the contract is renewed on the original line (Line A) and the unlimited data plan is removed from Line A.

  If you transfer an upgrade to another line, it does not extend the contract of the line you move it to, it will stay with the line that it came from so you would extending the contract of the line with the iPhone 5 on it, and yes, you would lose your unlimited data because you are doing a subsidized upgrade on that line.

You can keep your unlimited data as long as you do not sign a new contract on a line of service which has unlimited data. This is currently the Verizon policy, however it may or may not change in the future.

You obviously mean your line with an iPhone 5 has an available "subsidized" upgrade since ALL lines are ALWAYS eligible for a full retail upgrade. Transferring this "subsidized" upgrade for another line to use would STILL mean signing a new contract on your line with the iPhone 5, thus forfeiting your unlimited data as spelled out in my 1st sentence.

If you would like a lower price than full retail on a phone for the other line, you will have to wait until it is again eligible for a subsidized upgrade or check sites such as Swappa.com.

Thanks for all the comments. It sounds like a unanimous "No, you can't do that." Can anyone from Verizon officially chime in though?

It's frustrating to have a rep tell you false info. I can't post the exact chat transcript due to terms of service, but here is a very close paraphrase.

Me:So just to confirm, I could transfer the current available upgrade on my unlimited XXX-XXX-XXXX data line to, say, the XXX-XXX-XXXX line, and I would NOT lose my unlimited data, or jeopardize me maintaining my unlimited data in the future?

I agree with everyone, you will lose your unlimited data as you are renewing the contract On that line. Thus the loss of unlimited data

I can understand the importance of upgrading and keeping unlimited data nathanjf. I would love to provide you with some answers to ensure you make the right decision for your line. If you upgrade your line with a discount and contract extension, you will need to  choose a tiered data plan. The line that is upgrading will have to change their data plan. If you upgrade your line and transfer the phone to another line that has unlimited, that line will retain the feature.
