Someone spoofing my cell number

Sr. Member

I've had several calls from people upset that I'm calling them and wanting to know who I am.  But I'm not calling anyone - and I am the only one who uses this phone.   So I assume someone has been spoofing calls using my number.   Is there something I can do to stop this from happening?  I feel sorry for the people being called but they are quite upset and I don't know what I can do about it.

Sadly, there isn't a whole lot that can be done. I suspect that many of these telemarketers are located overseas...beyond the reach of our law.

On a few occasions, I've received calls on my landline where my own telephone number is being passed along as a part of the Caller ID data stream. I called Verizon Core (Ma Bell) to see if they could do anything, but, they could not.

My guess is that the telemarketers are using some sort of VoIP service to make their calls and their equipment is changing the originating telephone number being passed along with Caller ID.

Someone is spoofing my number today several times with my own number. I keep getting calls from my own number and one I answered and it was the Microsoft scam. What can be done?

Spoofing calls account for a large percentage of unwanted nuisance calls. This is a widespread issue impacting all phone service providers. Regrettably, anyone with internet access can use 3rd party software to disguise the source of a call. And it is typically impossible to trace the source due to the calls originating from the internet.

To further explain, spoofing happens when the calling party uses a paid service (like Spooftel, Spoofer or Spoof Card), which allows the calling party to change the message sent as Caller ID.

We recommend that you follow this link https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov/hc/en-us/articles/115002234203-Unwanted-Calls-Phone- to be able to file a complaint of concern regarding this situation.

SallyC, we recognize how challenging it can be if your number is being spoofed, and I want to ensure that you're equipped to manage your phone number. Fortunately, the FCC provides the following guide for Caller ID Spoofing: https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/spoofing-and-caller-id Please review the section titled "What can you do if your number is being spoofed?" In addition, I recommend taking advantage of our Call Filter app: https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/call-filter-faqs/ I am confident that these resources will be beneficial. Let us know if this helps.
