I have not changed my plan since 2007. I am still grandfathered into the unlimited data package they offered way back when. My question is: would it be possible for me to purchase a smartphone and use the "switch devices" option so I can use my current data package with it?

You can only retain the unlimited data plan if you purchase the phone at full retail price and not use the Edge payment option or the subsidized two year contract price option.
I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

I have the same plan and have upgraded my phone twice through amazon.com. Get the phone for a better price and it doesn't require you to change your plan. I have also upgraded the way you described because I have a family plan with several phone lines. It works too but I like the amazon.com method because it saves me money!
