Can I take a mp3 file I copied to my phone and make it a ring tone? Or do you have to pay for every single ring tone?

Maybe. It depends on the phone. My Blackberry Storm and my daughter's LG enV Touch do pretty well in saving MP3s as ringtones. However my older Samsung Alias (first Alias model) could only use the ringtones I purchased from VZW or the ones that came with the phone.

you can go to www.phonezoo.com and sign up and get free ringtones and make your own there.

As Karrie said, phonezoo will allow you to clip the mp3 to 30 seconds, and then format it and send it to your phone as a text/picture message that you can then save as a ringtone.

You can also take the file from My_Sounds and send it to yourself as a text message, and save it as a ringtone - not sure if you can do an entire mp3 though, ringtones are generally limited to 30 seconds or less.

makeownringtone.com - easier to use, no need to sign up and ringtones are not limited to 30 seconds (if your phone supports longer ringtones).
