Phone swap for device needing repair?

Someone told me that if my wireless phone is in need of repair I can go to a Verizon store and they will do a swap for me.  Is this true?  I think I'm missing something here.  I'd appreciate if someone could clarify/explain.  Thanks for your help!

There is no such thing as loaner phones.

There is a new level of insurance that provides same day screen repair for certain devices. I don't think that this is done in store.

If your phone is under warranty or you have extended warranty and the phone does not have any physical or liquid damage, Verizon will send you a replacement (not a new device) in the mail and you will have to send the defective one back.

ljstanislaus-

We definitely want to make sure that your device is in tip top shape. I want to make sure that we are on the same page. Are you referring to a loaner phone while you are waiting for a replacement phone? What seems to be going on with your current device? What make/model phone do you have?

Hi Amber,

I'm currently not experiencing issues, but I was told Verizon has a great device repair program in case something were to happen to my phone (I've never submitted it for repair).  If my phone were to have an issue that is "repairable"  does Verizon still just replace the phone when I bring it in, or would I submit it for repair and receive a loner in the meantime?  Does it depend on the protection option I choose?  Thanks.

Verizon Wireless doesn't repair devices. If they did at one time it was well over 15 years ago.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

What if my phone is out of warranty and I didn't buy insurance.  Can I still submit my phone to Verizon for repair?

No.

So if it were under warranty, physical damage is not covered by a warranty,  only manufacturer defects are. Aside from this, Verizon doesn't do repairs. With insurance, as was mentioned above there are some centers that are authorized Asurion "repair" sites that do screen replacements but is a new program and is not available everywhere.

If you are out of warranty and you don't have insurance with extended warranty or even just the extended warranty, you are basically out of luck.

This option is always explained by the rep at time of purchase and people don't listen to the reps when they are told that they should have this. The customer sees that it is $10 extra per month.

Think of 13 months of having the phone and it stops charging. You have paid $130 for the insurance/EW and you get a free replacement if there is no damage. Without the insurance/EW you're paying the balance of the phone to be able to get a new phone. So, out of pocket in one shot you could be looking at $600 to resolve the issue.

Of course the reps always say you should have this. For the vast majority, this is pure profit for Verizon/Asurion as many will never file a claim. When starting a claim, many will balk at the deductible and choose not to do so.

I look at it this way, I decline the insurance and "self insure" my phones. For about 25 years, I have had 2 cell lines and for the past 7 years I have had 4 lines. During that period of time I would have been paying premiums of $20/month(2 lines) for 25 years(lets say 15 years since premiums have gone up over time). I also would have been paying additional premiums of $20/month for the past 7 years. In total, I would have made premium payments of over $5000. During that time, I would have had exactly ONE instance where I possibly would have filed a claim. Instead, I simply re-activated an old phone I had on hand until I was chose to purchase a new phone. So that would have been $5000+ down the drain. The best "insurance" for a phone is to treat it with the care a high priced piece of delicate electronics deserves and not the haphazard way I see most people handle their devices.

Cell phone insurance premiums AND deductibles are overpriced. I would NEVER recommend someone to purchase insurance on their phone UNLESS they had a history of not being able to take care of their device and usually have to have it repaired or replaced every 9-12 months due to it not lasting for a reasonable amount of time.
