Phone purchased elsewhere

Im eligible for upgrade 4/2015 but am having issues with my current S5 not holding a charge and rely on it for work so I must have a working device. It's much cheaper to buy a phone via Amazon than through Verizon. If i buy a phone elsewhere, how will this affect my account.

Unless you specifically make changes to your account, replacing a phone with one you purchased somewhere else doesn't affect your account at all.  I've done this many times (in order to keep a grandfathered plan.)  You just need to activate the new phone on your account.

If he has an unlimited data plan he needs to make sure he buys outright and not under contract.

That's an excellent question. If you were to purchase a device through a 3rd party, the only thing that would change on your account is the Device Effective Date. It will not impact your Device Upgrade Date.
