You would think for someone who requires constant phone service, you would have a more reliable method instead of cellular.

Landline for instance which is a MUCH more reliable service than cellular which is subject to all kinds of factors outside the control of ANY service provider.

Sorry, not all people can afford a home land line with what they live on.....Glad you believe that.....Not true.

I agree with what has already been said. Mobile phones are a convenience. I know that they have come a looooong way in a short amount of time but they are still only a convenience. When a storm hits, if the power at a cell tower or multiple cell towers goes out then the phone is rendered useless. With a land line, I have never seen this happen. That is provided that you are not using VoIP or cordless telephones. If you are using a standard land line service and have a standard touch tone phone attached to it, you will have better connectivity than with cellular service. Land lines aren't effected by such things as weather, buildings, trees or power outages causing connectivity issues. I know that most people have given up land lines and go with their mobile service but for someone who is at home most of the time they should have a land line and even a service such as Life Alert where they have something around their neck and they can push a button to summon EMS. I think there are even systems that can detect falls and summon EMS automatically.

So, while cellular service being diminished or completely out is an inconvenience, it is not a public utility and is not subject to the same rules and can't be blamed for lack of connectivity in an emergency like you wish to do.

Think about it.

Just to add to this, people are always quick to blame Verizon in an instance like this. But getting mad at Verizon because you have chosen this method for people that need this and are being put into a potentially life-threatening situation as a result is borderline negligent with regard to what was already stated above. Additionally though, outages occur for many reasons outside of Verizon's control such as weather, interference, cut fiber optic bundles, etc. The list goes on and on. Since this is the case and is standard given the technology and possibility for outside factors to cause outages, to get mad at the provider because there are people depending on this for life threatening emergencies when they shouldn't be, is only the fault of the person who made this the only possibility to reach 911 for those at risk.
