Verizon should establish a North American plan.

Europe so have a EU plan as well, since their currency is the same and they work together on most things.

Ok I have to put in my two cents here. The reason you can call from maine to hawii is that the towers are owned by the same company. To call to canada or mexico. They are owned by another company that bills us. So your issue shouldn't be why do you get charged. But why do those other countries charge you so much.

Well, that is not necessarily true. I can call from Maine to Hawaii and it could terminate on a landline number, or a AT&T users cell, t-mobile, Sprint, etc. It still is more or less free! Within the US it does not matter what number it terminates, except text to speach to landlines which VZW feels the need to gouge you 25 cents... ITS FREE FOR SPRINT USERS TO DO THE SAME THING!

Now, here is the interesting thing. Lets say that you send from your phone to someone elses email ... In another country.,guess what? Its free ... Right?

"You can also set your phone under your System Select settings to "Home Only"...this will make your phone roam only off domestic towers and not pick up international towers when you're near the border."

Is this done to avoid the roaming charges?

Exactly, Carm! Free to text to anyone's email in the world!

And yes, turning it to home only is to avoid international roaming charges.
