Is there a way to switch from a 2-year plan to Edge without waiting a full 2 years?

I don't qualify for Edge apparently, so I'm considering getting a 2-year plan for now, but the whole reason I wanted Edge was to upgrade more often than every 2 years. Is there a way to switch from 2-year to Edge or to upgrade early before my contract is out? I won't ever be late on my bill, but am really, really trying to avoid waiting 2 years to get a new phone.
