Is it possible to port a number from an account you don't own?

My daughter's boyfriend gave her a phone on his sprint account for her birthday in February.  We just cancelled her old verizon numbers so, of course they are breaking up now.  Does anyone know if she can take that new number with her without his permission?  Or is she stuck with getting a new number again?

Thanks,

If he is the account owner, he would have to approve the port.

I can't imagine he would want to continue paying for an extra line. Why wouldn't she ask to get his permission?

I figured as much.  You wouldn't think he would want to pay for the extra line either, but the cancellation fee will be horrendous since he just got it for her.  I also suspect he got it using the monthly fee program that lets you upgrade any time.  I think that means the phone isn't "his", so he couldn't let her take the phone with her if he wanted to.

I just wanted to cover all my bases.  We don't have a landline, so we really can't be without a phone.

Thanks,
