I'm Appalled!!!

The customer service agents at every Verizon Wireless store I've dealt with must be taught by the "corporate" office how to be as vague as possible and how to talk as fast as they can and skirt every question with an ambiguous answer!!! My daughter upgraded her iPhone and was, of course, bombarded with add-on offers, one being Verizon's Total Mobile Protection for only $10.00!!! What a deal!!! (they also sold her a case that she could have bought at Walmart for 1/3rd of what Verizon charged). But, in doing his "job", the agent failed to tell her that the protection was $10/month! Square Trade Warranties offers a 2 year warranty on iPhone 5S's  almost exactly like the Total Mobile Protection plan, for a total of $94.00 for two years of coverage. If Verizon's phone area coverage wasn't the best in our area, I'd be shopping for a new carrier. BUYER'S BEWARE, ASK QUESTIONS UNTIL YOU GET A LEGITIMATE  ANSWER! DON'T LET THEM TALK YOU INTO ANYTHING!!!

I had a smooth, quick talker yesterday, which is one thing, but I asked specific questions and completely lied too!  I feel your pain.  I am not naive to Verizons ways.  I have been with them sense the Air Touch days. Same account.. so I know the ropes, but to be lied too by sales is not acceptable.

I also have been with Verizon since they bought out my previous carrier many years ago. My daughter lives in another city and I wasn't with her, and of course, they tried to take advantage of her. I try and stay away from the Verizon stores, it's much easier to deal with them via the website. Much more cut-and-dried.

If it was added to the account recently, why not just cancel the insurance and get the other one you described?  Also, is it possible that the agent did say it was $10/month but your daughter did not hear that part or forgot it? The insurance, along with the monthly cost, should be on the receipt given with the upgrade.  I am not trying to say your daughter is not telling the truth, but it is entirely possible she might have forgotten that part or didn't hear it...I always am excited to get a new phone and sometimes neglect to pay attention to the terms the rep gives me.

Then simply have her cancel the Total Mobile Protection and get the Square Trade policy.

For what it is worth, the Square Trade policy DOES NOT cover loss and I am not sure but with Verizon's plan I don't think you have to send the device in first like you do with Square Trade. Regardless, the Square Trade deal is certainly an option.

As a disclaimer to all of the above, I don't EVER get any of these policies for my devices. I think they are ALL a waste of money. That is only my opinion, though. Others obviously think otherwise.

I agree with you, rcschnoor...I don't get the insurance on my phones, but my husband is in construction and his phones have met a variety of unusual tragedies, so his smartphone is covered for the first year. After that I think it is a ridiculous waste of money.

The VZW in-store workers I encounter try to be as negative as possible until you are afraid to speak to them.

"You know you won't have insurance on this phone anymore"

"You know you will lose your unlimited data"

"You know you lost your warranty by trading phones with your friend"

"You know we will have to add x fee"

"You know we don't have any of those in stock"

"You know you don't get x discount anymore"

"You will have to call the 800#, I can't help you with that"

"I have the same problem, you should call the 800# and complain"

HOWEVER, the first time a VZW in-store worker FAILS to mention one of those statements will be the time someone accuses them of "lying" OR failing to inform them that they would lose something such as unlimited data, warranty, discount, insurance, etc...

Kind of a Catch-22 I would say.

I have found that long time customers who keep up to date with their plans and devices more than likely know those questions and the answers they can expect.

I have found that when I visit the verizon corporate store locally I know what I want, I know how much it costs, and I always make sure " no changes are made to my account under any circumstances" in fact even that manager gets all nervous when I start talking. The customer through personality projection shows that he/she is not going to be talked or walked into anything.

You never leave the store without a printed receipt. You never buy any opened accessory or device or not sealed, you firmly tell the sales person that you want nothing more than what you ask for. You don't fall for you need a case and screen protector or it voids your warranty, you must buy a Bluetooth headset because NY requires you don't drive and hold a cell phone. (There is a law that says no cell phone use while driving, but it does not require you to buy a headset)

You don't let them tell you that the warranty is void without a case, its not. Or the one I liked was your device needs the car charger to get a real charge. Then why do you use the charger in your home?

You have to be careful since they are really misinformed or told to lie and cheat you to make a sale.

A few years ago the manager told me not to bring it back in 14 days if my wife didn't like her phone. I told him if she wants the phone that is fine, if she wants to return it he will either exchange it or refund me. And if need be I will simply charge back the purchase off my card. He was very taken aback. But you don't make yourself a victim you make yourself known that you will not stand to be victimized.

Half the people that go into the store, or call on the phone just don't or won't let their concerns or needs be known.

A pity.

I agree completely. The sales reps are taught to sell sell sell, and their job depends on it. Being a proactive and informed consumer is the only way to avoid being pressured or deceived. I find lying by omission is the most frequently used tactic...they don't necessarily lie, but they leave out information that will create questions and doubt in the value of what they are selling.
