And, of course, that moves me up to the need for chargeable Cloud storage. How do I delete thousands of duplicates and avoid future dups by Cloud?

That is definitely odd and we are here to help. Do you know if you have some images saved in more than one location? Also have you set to backup a separate folder where pictures may be saved? If you delete the duplicate does it return again?
