Add a line with existing device - credit check??

I just signed up to add a line to my plan with a phone I already have. I had planned to give it to my sister who's going out of town tomorrow but Verizon is now saying I have to wait two to three days for a credit check. WHY??

I've had service with them for 6 years. This is ridiculous!
