Data Restrictions with Family Base
VALDUB6
Newbie

My child's school requires that any internet access used on school premises is through their network.  Therefore I need to block cellular data only during school hours on my child's phone.  Is that possible with Family Base or any other way?

Having Family Base is a great way to accomplish controls over your child's phone, VALDUB6. rcschnoor provided a helpful way to turn off data from the device itself, and we've got the Family Base option that will ensure cellular is not available during school hours. You can set Time Restrictions via the website or the app on your device. Here's a link with a video on how to set this from the website: http://spr.ly/65838vSJ1

Here's also links on how to set this via your phone app, with both a version of the link for Apple and Android devices. http://spr.ly/65848vSJG

Normally, if a phone is logged into a wifi network the phone will default to that signal over a cellular signal when that wifi signal is available. As long as your child is able to log into the school's wifi, I don't see it would be a problem. Otherwise, the school would have to not allow any of the school's students to carry a cell phone as there would be no way for them to otherwise guarantee the only "internet access" would be thru their network. I can't imagine the every person carrying a cellphone in the school would be willing to pay for such a service limiting their cellular network access while on school property.

The only way the phone would default to the cellular network would be if your child turned off the wifi radio on the phone temporarily.

My child’s school is the same way, VALDUB6. The great news is that FamilyBase offers the option for you to restrict specific times the device can’t be used. You can create a schedule through FamilyBase that restrict the time or days of the week when voice calls, messaging or data use is allowed. It will not change his/her access to Wi-Fi and will also still allow calls or messages from Trusted Contacts you select (such as yourself). Rcschnoor was also correct that the phone should also default to Wi-Fi connections it has already established. But if you’d like to make sure the mobile data connection is restricted, there’s a fantastic guide at https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/how-to-use-familybase/ to help with FamilyBase. Visit the Setting Up Controls section and select Time Restrictions in step 3 to create a usage schedule for school.
