international call and text

Hi everyone, I have a very important question and I hope someone can help me out with it. My girlfriend is moving to Africa for a month for some missionary work. Now I have unlimited txt and I know verizon has the free calls within the verizon network, but my question is will there be any extra charges for calls or txt when I try to reach her in Africa?

Africa is most likely outside the Verizon network, so yes it will cost you extra $$. For instance, see the text web page here:

Text messaging is based on where you are located. If you are in the US then you text messaging ti for us only. If you are in the another country then unlimited text messaging is not valid because you are in another country.

Kenya is expensive, $1.49 per min for calling landlines, $1.58 for mobiles, or with the $3.99 per month plan the per minute rates drop to 49c and 58c (so well worth doing if you make even a few minute calls!)

However, her existing VZ phone is unlikely to work in Kenya (not on the CDMA roaming list) , so probably needs a GSM phone.  With an unlocked phone, she could buy a local SIM and get much cheaper rates for her to call you.
